ARE YOU READY TO BREAK A RECORD?
On Friday, September 17, Emergency Food Network and Northwest Harvest come together at Tacoma's Stadium Bowl to raise awareness of hunger and attempt to break the current world record for the most pounds of food collected during a food drive in a 24-hour period.
The goal? One million pounds of food... equivalent to twenty-five semi-truckloads.
We want to shatter the current Guinness World record of 509,147 pounds that is currently held by a Canadian group. Already, corporate and civic groups are committing to sponsoring entire truckloads of food.
Why the Stadium bowl?
The Stadium Bowl in Tacoma, Washington will be 100 years old in September of 2010.
The Bowl, which was built in 1910, has hosted concerts and events from Louis Armstrong, John Phillips Souza, Babe Ruth, William Jennings Bryan to United States Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Warren Harding. The Bowl has always been a place to make history so it is the PERFECT place to set this world record.
What's happening?
The event kicks off at 4:00 p.m. Friday, 9/17 following a parade in Tacoma. At 6 p.m. is the Stadium High School homecoming football game against Bellarmine Prep High School. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items with them to the game.
During the subsequent 24 hours, numerous community events will highlight the Bowl's impressive history while simultaneously bringing attention to the statewide need for hunger relief.
